Related Blog Post – Have You Asked for “Help” Lately?
I walked around our apartment silently, holding my breath, staring in awe and wonder. The apartment I had left only four hours before, had been completely transformed in ways that I could not have expected.
Handing the key to Robin, owner of Pomegranate Vintage Modern blog, was easy. The previous week, Robin had come over to take a look at the bones of what we had in our apartment, learned about my goals for our space, and gone shopping with me to give me a sampling of what she was thinking might help bring two of our four rooms together.
I Thought I Knew What I Was Getting Into
After the shopping session, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what Robin was going to do.
But, judging from the pleasant surprise and shock that I had as I walked around looking at how great our apartment looked, I was wrong. I had no idea what she was going to do.
And Then There Were Tears?
Robin had wanted to personally escort me as I toured the apartment for what she continually refers to as “the big reveal.” I had thought that such a quaint term until it was my turn to do it.
It was a big reveal. Huge, in fact. And, in the end, I am glad that she wasn’t there to escort me because the transformation was so beautiful that, as I rounded the corner into the dining / kitchen area, I spotted one of our favorite plants in a new nook where I never would have thought to put it . . . and something about the beauty of it in its new spot made me tear up a little . . . because I had found a new beauty spot in the house where one wasn’t before.
I got to re-experience the transformation again, as I watched my boyfriend go through the same steps I had gone through upon his returning to the apartment later that day.
In an odd turnabout, I feel like his comments are more illuminating than mine could be under the circumstances . . . Here are the things he said . . .
- Babe, we could never have envisioned this
- She’s a genius
- Best of all, “It’s Us”
What I Learned
I learned that it is possible for someone else to see the externalizations of me and “get me” better than I could get myself.
Next Steps
One of the best things about this process is that I learned a few priceless core basics about design that, oddly enough, I knew already from my novice experiments with photography. Next step . . . a series of blog posts on how design and photography play off of one another and what that could mean for our lives.
And, Oh Yes, the Pictures
Robin took all the before and after pictures, so I’ll let you see the place from her eyes. Check it out in her blog post – “A Small Price to Pay.“

Deb it looks fabulous, and yes, very you. I’m going to have to get Robin to do my guest room. It’s become storage space.

What a great idea Marie – yes, get on her list quick before she gets famous and her fees start going up:).
Also, when you are ready, things will move quickly. I thought it would take her a few weeks to get back to me, but by the next weekend, she was ready to rock n’ roll!

Thank you sooo much, Deb, for your beautiful words! It was a lot of fun to work on your apartment… I can’t wait to take on my next design challenge.

I’m just thrilled to have been able to benefit from your expertise. Now, my goal is to begin helping everyone with their avocations!!! And, in case, I haven’t told you, within 4 hours of hanging out in the new digs, it already felt like home! That’s a great job, if I say so myself!

Wow! Wow! Again, WOW! I’ve always been super impressed with Robin’s eye for things, but this “hidden layer” is amazing. I’ll be praising her (loudly) next time I run into her in the halls or shuttle.

I couldn’t agree with you more, and I know she will appreciate the praise. Thanks for volunteering to openly praise her, Scott, and thanks for commenting on the blog!
